Why You Should Consider Distance Learning

Distance learning, a brief overview:

Distance learning is fast becoming the first choice among adults looking to go back to school. Also refered to as online university, online eductation, distance learning degrees, long distance learning and other names, this way of learning allows individuals to pursue an educational certificate or degree through a “name” institution or school from the comfort of their home using a computer and internet connection.

With the rise of the internet, distance learning via mail has become a thing of the past, being replaced by the faster, more full and complete internet experience that everyone is so familiar with. It is actually a better learning experience as well.. With only a computer, internet access and the desire to succeed, you can earn a higher education degree without ever setting foot inside a classroom.

The Flexibility of Distance Learning Education

The main benefit of distance learning education is the flexibility you have, particularly if you are employed full time and have adult commitments, kids or other various adult responsibilities. You can attend class late at night once the children are asleep, or listen to a lecture in the morning before getting ready for your work day. The freedom to work on your own schedule is the major benefit of online school, and one of the main reasons to give some thought to distance learning education. Less expensive fees for online courses also makes many online schools more affordable than traditional colleges or universites, adding another benefit to those considering expanding on their current education. Lastly, the ability to get a degree or a certificate, such as the paralegal certificate online, is yet another benefit.

Drawbacks of an Online Education

Being able to motivate yourself, and stay motivated, is very important when taking a distance learning course. A great deal of people that are taking online classes are surprised by how much they miss the daily interaction with their peers, and even with their instructors, that is lacking when dealing with distance learning education. Taking a distance learning course requires students to be able to manage their time properly, stay on task and meet your deadlines. Staying on task can be difficult for some, but it is very important simply because you do not have the instructor there to motivate you or hold you accountable.

Types of Distance Learning

When we discuss distance learning colleges, there are two basic types of courses offered. There are synchronous and asynchronous learning courses. In a nutshell, the difference is that with synchronous learning, you have to attend class. There are set times for instruction, and you will need to be on your computer, attending class at these set times.? The learning and instruction takes place on a set schedule, and communication is through chat or instant messaging in real time. Asynchronous courses, however, give you more freedom. You do not have set class times, and you do not have to log in with the other students to attend virtual class. You do not typically have real time communication. Usually your communication comes on discussion boards or through email. It is the asynchronous courses that truly give you the freedom that many distance learning students require.

What Institution To Choose

There are many distance learning colleges and schools that offer various classes and degree programs to meet many students needs. Once you have chosen what your ultimate goal is, you should choose an online institution that best fits your learning style and has a good reputation in your chosen field. You will also want to be sure to choose a school that is fully accredited so your degree is viewed in a good light by your future employers as well as other colleges and universities should you want to change and go to another institution.

With a good education, and a higher education degree, you can bolster your resume and get started on the career path of your choice with more upward mobility. Whether you are trying to obtain your masters, bachelors or doctorate degree, getting that educational degree can only improve your chances at success.
